Tic disorders are characterized by repetitive, unprovoked motor and/or phonic tics. They are chronic conditions with a prevalence estimated at 0.6 to 1.5% in the general population and are more common in children than in adults. Tic disorders may have a genetic or neurobiological origin. Pharmacological treatment is justified when functional impairment is present. The therapeutic options for the management of tic disorders include the use of psychotropic drugs and clozapine, the latter being an effective treatment for refractory cases. The most recent data indicate that risperidone is a new and interesting agent for the treatment of tic disorders because it is effective and its efficacy is well established in the treatment of schizophrenia, particularly in reducing tic symptoms and increasing tic-free intervals. For better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of in-the-ear (ITE) and insert earphones (IEP) for high-frequency hearing loss, speech recognition test with realistic and naturalistic babble noise was performed with ITE and IEP of different earphone types. Speech recognition was measured with their binaural combinations in 10 listeners with high-frequency hearing loss at a signal-to-noise ratio of 0 dB, 10 dB and 15 dB. An earphone with a vent for the direct listening was used for the test. The speech recognition in babble noise was better in ITE than in IEP in most of the combinations of binaural listening. ITE of the earphone with the vent for the direct listening was the best in a noise with the SNR = 0 dB, IEP of the earphone without the vent was the best in a noise with the SNR = 15 dB.
